Alcohol Treatment Medications

in General Discussions

Medical management of the physical aspects of addiction is one of the advantages of inpatient treatment. Using prescription drugs in conjunction with treatment increases recovery success rate to 50%.

Medications can be used to alleviate withdrawal symptoms in order to avoid relapse or to create a negative physical reaction to alcohol that helps eliminate the desire to drink. The following drugs are commonly used in alcohol detox and recovery:

  1. Acamprosate is a drug that is used to treat alcohol cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

  2. Naltrexone is a medication that is used to reduce cravings for alcohol as well as its pleasurable effects.

  3. Vivitrol is a Naltrexone extended-release formulation.

  4. When alcohol is consumed, disulfiram has severe negative effects.
